FLOYD COUNTY, Ind. – January 14, 2026 – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors will begin pre-construction activities for the Improve 64 project next month. Initial work includes vegetation management in select areas within the project corridor.

Work is expected to begin on or after February 2 and conclude in late March. While pre-construction activities are in progress, intermittent overnight shoulder and single-lane closures will be used between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on:

  • Southbound I-265 between I-64 and the State Street interchange

  • I-64 in both directions between I-265 and U.S. 150

The final construction schedule is still being confirmed, with construction currently anticipated to begin this summer and be substantially completed by the end of 2029. More information on the construction schedule will be shared once available.

Improve 64 is part of INDOT’s strategy to reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility along I-64 in Floyd County, enhancing the overall travel experience along the corridor. The project includes added travel lanes and interchange improvements to enhance the corridor’s operational efficiency. Bridge and culvert replacement and rehabilitation, as well as noise barrier, new guardrail, and concrete barrier wall installation on portions of I-64, I-265 and U.S. 150 are also part of the project.

The construction contract was awarded to William Charles Construction in November 2025.
